Met 82 eerder niet uitgebrachte nummers vullen The Lost Albums hoofdstukken van Springsteens uitgebreide carrièretijdlijn in, terwijl ze onschatbare inzichten bieden in zijn leven en werk als artiest. "The Lost Albums waren volledige platen, sommige zelfs tot het punt dat ze werden gemixt en niet werden uitgebracht", aldus Springsteen. "Ik heb deze muziek al jaren voor mezelf en vaak ook voor goede vrienden afgespeeld. Ik ben blij dat je eindelijk de kans krijgt om ze te horen. Ik hoop dat je ervan geniet."
Van de lo-fi-exploratie van LA Garage Sessions '83, die diende als een cruciale schakel tussen Nebraska en Born in the U.S.A., tot de drumloop en synthesizergeluiden van Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, The Lost Albums bieden ongekende context voor 35 productieve jaren van Springsteens songwriting en thuisopnames. "De mogelijkheid om thuis op te nemen wanneer ik maar wilde, gaf me de mogelijkheid om een breed scala aan verschillende muzikale richtingen in te slaan," legde Springsteen uit. Gedurende de set neemt dat sonische experiment de vorm aan van filmmuziekwerk (voor een film die nooit is gemaakt) op Faithless, countrycombo's met pedal steel op Somewhere North of Nashville, rijk geweven grensverhalen op Inyo, orkestgedreven, mid-century noir op Twilight Hours en E Street-favoriete rock op Perfect World.
The Lost Albums zijn verkrijgbaar in een beperkte oplage van negen LP's en zeven cd's, inclusief originele verpakking voor elke eerder niet uitgebrachte plaat, met een 100 pagina's tellend, hardcover boek met stoffen band met zeldzame archieffoto's, liner notes op elk verloren album van essayist Erik Flannigan en een persoonlijke introductie van het project door Springsteen zelf.
